What's happening bike-wise in Seattle this weekend? Just the Dead Baby Downhill, Tour de Fat and Bike Polo Championships.
Recreational bicycle rides also are on tap in the Snoqualmie Valley to the east and in the Tenino and Yelm area to the south.
Dead Baby Downhill
The Dead Baby Downhill race and party on Friday starts at the Comet Tavern, 922 E. Pike in Seattle and heads downhill from there.
The finish line is not disclosed, but I've read that it's someplace in the Georgetown neighborhood. That's where the post-race party kicks off with live bands, sideshow rodeo, Helltrack BMX and tall bike jousting.
Cycleside from the San Francisco Bay area will be on hand with bicycle-powered amusement rides as will the local Bicycle Belles performers.
Registration for the mutant bicycle race is closed, but you can follow along and check out the celebration afterwards.
Tour de Fat
On Saturday, Gas Works Park plays host to the return of New Belgium Brewery's Tour de Fat.
This year's celebration of the bicycle culture begins with registration for the bike parade at 10 a.m., followed by the 6-mile parade at 11 a.m. Festivities get underway at noon, featuring the Sprockettes dance troupe from Portland, Loyd Family Players Salsa Drum Corps, Handsome Little Devils present: Squirm Burpee Circus and more.
The highlight of Tour de Fat is the rewarding of a bicycle to someone who promises to give up their car in return for a fully loaded commuting bicycle — kind of the ultimate clunker exchange.
Bike polo
On Saturday and Sunday the North American Hardcourt Bike Polo Championship rolls out at Magnuson Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you've never watched bike polo before, this would be a good introduction. It's the event's first visit to Seattle and the sport's best bike polo players are expected to show.
Four polo courts will be available for three-person teams. Seeding is on Saturday and the double elimination tournament is Sunday. The winners get their plane tickets to the Worlds paid for by sponsors.
Bike rides
If feel more like participating than spectating on Sunday, a couple of good bike rides are scheduled.
The Tour de Peaks rolls out from North Bend with ride options of 15, 35 and 80 miles.
Also Sunday, the Capital Bicycling Club sponsors the Tenino-Rainier-Yelm-Bucoda Rally, aka TRYBR, bike ride. It starts at 7 a.m. in Tenino.
