Cadel Evans will be wearing the leader's jersey at the Dauphiné Libéré on Thursday when the peloton sets out on the 95-mile bicycle race to Mont Ventoux.
The Australian regained the yellow jersey by finishing second in the individual time trial on Wednesday, trailing Bert Grabsch of Columbia-High Road by 7 seconds.
Alberto Contador, Evans' chief rival in the Dauphiné and the upcoming Tour de France in July, finished 5th on Wednesday, 44 seconds behind Grabsch. The Astana cyclist is 2nd in the overall standings, 45 seconds behind Evans.
Contador will be looking to gain back some, if not all, of that time on the slopes of the massive Mont Ventoux on Thursday. It's the first of the Alpine summits that the Dauphiné Libéré will cross in the last four stages of the race that ends on Sunday in Grenoble.
David Millar of Garmin-Slipstream finished in 3rd place on Wednesday, raising his overall standings to 5th place at 1:09 behind Evans. Grabsch and Frantisek Rabon round out 3rd and 4th places overall.
