This scene from Twin Bridges, Montana, might have made an impression on bike travelers pedaling through on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail over the years.
Those bicycle tourists certainly made an impression on the people of Twin Bridges, population 400.
In fact, those cyclists have made such a good impression that citizens of the town in southwestern Montana are creating a bicycle campground right on the shores of the Beaverhead River.
The only problem is that the folks in Twin Bridges don't tour by bicycle, so they need some help to determine what's needed at the campground.
Bill White of Twin Bridges recently contacted Adventure Cycling Association, the non-profit that created the TransAmerica Trail, to find out what bicycles might like in their campground. He wrote:
“I have met dozens of cyclists passing through and they were some of the nicest people I ever have met. So, I gathered the troops and moved a concept to a reality. The problem is, none of us cycle and we don't really know what the needs of cyclists are. …
“So far, we are planning on showers, toilets, a screened gazebo with tables, benches, a bike vise, 110-volt power for charging needs, a utility sink for washing clothes and/or dishes, a bike-wash rack, chain-link lockable enclosures for bike lockup, and a community fire ring with wood furnished. It will be supported entirely by voluntary donations.”
Sounds like they have a lot covered. A visit to the website, Twin Bridges Bicycle Campground, reveals a map and information that there are several restaurants, a general store, a library with WIFI, museum and an espresso stand all within several blocks. If you're timing is right, you might show up in town during the county fair.
The town is located at the confluence of three rivers, the Big Hole, Ruby and Beaverhead, which are blue ribbon trout fishing rivers.
Feel free to email Bill at the above website with any suggestions you might have. They'd like to have the facility open by Memorial Day.
