Seattle bicyclist struck and killed in Renton is identified

Update: Dec. 12 — The bicycle rider has been identified as Paul Douglas Ratliff. The medical examiner's office says he died from blunt force injuries, including a skull fracture, suffered in the crash.

The P-I reports Ratliff had lights on his bike and was wearing safety gear, including a reflective vest, when he was struck. The crash is still under investigation.

Ratliff lived in Skyway and worked at NC Power Systems since 1979. He rode his bicycle to work for most of his career.

My condolensces go out to his family and friends.


Dec. 11 version

A Seattle bicycle rider was killed about 6:30 a.m. Thursday in Renton when a motorist made a left turn in front of him, according to Sheriff's deputies.

The 56-year-old cyclist has not been identified; neither has the 79-year-old Renton man who was driving the car.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the 1997 Lincoln Town Car, although the investigation is continuing.

Authorities told the Seattle Times that the cyclist was riding southeast on Renton Avenue South in the Skyway neighborhood of Renton when the motorist made the left hand turn at South 130st Street.
