Great Britain set the world and Olympic record in beating Denmark in the men's team pursuit at the Beijing Olympics on Monday.
Bradley Wiggins secured his second gold medal of this Olympics by his team's win. In setting the 3:53 record, the team beat the record it set in the qualifying round on Sunday and nearly caught the team from Denmark, which took gold. New Zealand beat Australia for the gold.
Women's sprint
Meanwhile, Jennie Reed did not qualify for the finals in the women's sprint quarterfinals at the Laoshan Velodrome. Reed, who attended Issaquah High School and now lives in Kirkland, Washington, lost to Willy Kanis of the Netherlands.
Reed finished in 10th place in the women's sprint in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Since then, she's taken up keirin and trained at long-distance pursuit events, which she said has helped her sprinting.
Earlier this year, Reed finished 3rd in the women's sprint World Championships in Manchester, England.
Advancing to Tuesday's finals are Victoria Pendleton of Great Britain, Shuang Guo of China, Anna Meares of Australia and Kanis.
Tuesday
Three gold medals will be handed out on Tuesday at the Laoshan Velodrome, although is only competing in one event, the Men's Madison. The US team didn't have anyone to qualify in the men's or women's sprint finals.
The US team of Michael Friedman and Bobby Lea is facing 15 other teams. With Great Britain putting up Bradley Wiggins (already with two gold medals) and Mark Cavendish, I'd say the contests will be for silver and bronze.
