Update: Wiens wins for sixth time; Armstrong finishes second

What did I do in the old days when a promising relationship turned sour?  Go for a nice long bike ride.

This morning I read Lance Armstrong and Kate Hudson decided to part ways, and this afternoon I hear that Armstrong plans to compete in the Leadville Trail 100 Mountain Bike Race on Aug. 9.

Maybe it's just a coincidence. Armstrong said he was going to do the mountain bike race last year, but he had to cancel when another committment arose. Floyd Landis did ride last year, and finished second place to David Wiens.

Race owner Ken Chlouber broke the news to the Summit Daily News and hinted that Armstrong has been in Aspen to train for the altitude. The 100-mile race ranges from 10,200 feet elevation to 12,600.

If he goes through with it this time, I think it would be his first pro race since retiring after the 2005 Tour de France. Since then he has laced up his running shoes and participated in two New York City marathons and the Boston Marathon.

More details, background and speculation at UltraRob's Adventures, where I first saw it on his twitter. By the way, blogger Rob Lucas also is planning to ride Leadville this year.

Aug. 4, 2008 update: According to VeloNews, Armstrong is riding a 26-inch Trek Top Fuel 9.8 full suspension mountain bike in the Leadville 100. It's under 23 pounds. The specs are in the VeloNews story, “Armstrong is riding…” .

If you want to be the first kid on your block with this bike, here's a link to the Top Fuel full-suspension line at Trek website.
