I committed a real “Dewey Defeats Truman” blunder at Biking Bis on Saturday when I named Trent Lowe at the overall leader of the Tour de Georgia following the Brasstown Bald stage.
It was Kanstantin Sivtsov (Belarus) of Team High Road who actually captured the overall lead after powering ahead of Trent Lowe and Levi Leipheimer in the final yards on the mountain.
I had listened to and watched the video stream of the end of the final stage, rushed to file a story on the results (here's the incorrect story), then logged off for the day as I undertook to catch up on my one-person parenting duties while my wife is out of town.
Big mistake.
Sivtsov was sitting high enough in the standings after Saturday's stage that his final kick to the finish line propelled him ahead of Lowe in the standings. He finished 10 seconds ahead of Lowe on the stage, which put him 4 seconds ahead overall.
I was frankly horrified to discover the mistake this morning, and I offer my apologies.
My only consolation is that 17 minutes after the finish of the race, CyclingNews announced: “Looks like we're not really quite done yet. We've gotten word that Trent Lowe is not our GC leader after all.”
And VeloNews reports that, for the first few minutes after the race, Lowe and the Slipstream team thought they had bagged the win as well.
I have the same obligations at home today, so for Stage 7 results, I'll recommend checking VeloNews, CyclingNews or other webistes that have undistracted reporters and editors covering the race.
