Congratulations to Kirkland's Jennie Reed for winning the gold medal in keirin at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
The 29-year-old also won a bronze in the individual pursuit; Sarah Hammer, 24, of Temecula, California, won the silver medal in that event.
Both are looking ahead to gold medals in track cycling in this summer's 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
It was the first world championship for Reed, an Issaquah High School grad who has been racing on the US team since 1998. Because there is no keirin in the Olympics, she'll be competing in track sprint. She writes about some earlier successes at her Jennie Reed blog.
Hammer was the defending two-time world champion in individual pursuit, but was beaten by Rebecca Romero of the UK. Hammer made an interesting comeback, having dropped out of racing only to return after watching the 2004 Olympics on TV.
Other US action at the track championships:
Bobby Lea of Mertztown, Pennsylvania rode to a solid seventh-place finish in his first-ever world championship omnium. The five-event competition.
Becky Quinn of Quakertown, Pennsylvania, placed fifth in the women’s 10-kilometer scratch race.
Earlier, Taylor Phinney of Boulder, Colorado, recorded a new world-record time for a junior in the men's individual pursuit. His effort put him in 8th place at the UCI event. He's looking for a spot on the US Olympic team going to the Summer Games. Taylor's parents are Olympic medalists Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter.
