Vegan cyclists stick with bamboo bikes

Calfee Designs is supplying its bamboo bikes to a California-based bicycle racing team composed exclusively of vegans.

OrganicAthlete launched its cycling team in 2007 and five of its athletes will be riding the bamboo bikes this year.

Although he experimented with bamboo about 10 years ago, Craig Calfee has been building the bamboo bikes at his Santa Cruz County shop for three or four years. The bamboo tubing is bound with a hemp-fiber wrap that helps create a green, renewable bicycle.

Vegans

To Roger Clemens and others who are unfamiliar with vegans, these are vegetarians who don't eat anything from animals and avoid other animal products when possible.

The mission of the OrganicAthlete organization is “to promote health and ecological stewardship among athletes of all ages and abilities by sharing information, building community and inspiring through athletic example.”

Bradley Saul is founder of OrganicAthlete and a category 1 cyclist, himself. He's been riding a bamboo bike for about a year.

Bamboo

The bike is designed for everyday use and racing, says the Calfee website. The bike made from black bamboo dampens vibration better than carbon fiber, weighs about 4 pounds but has good stiffness and is very tough. Because of the nature of bamboo, the frame can't be painted and requires occasional wiping down with furniture polish.

Good luck to TeamVegan and those cyclists on their bamboo bikes.
