Tom Boonen is the latest pro cyclist to announce he's competing in the 2008 Tour of California, which rolls out Feb. 17-24.
The QuickStep sprinter who recently won the Tour of Qatar thrives in the spring classics in Europe, but wanted to try something different. There will be plenty of time for more those other races later in the spring.
The Belgian racer won the green jersey at the Tour de France last year.
VeloNews says it isn't Boonen's first time racing in the US, as he's raced in the Sea Otter, Redlands Classics and the Philadelphia races early in his career.
Last year Italy's Paolo Bettini, wearing the world champion jersey, competed in Tour of California. He's expected to return this year.
