It's hard to imagine the Interbike trade show anywhere except Las Vegas, but coordinators are considering relocating the fall bicycle expo to another city.
The long-term contract at the Sands Convention Center runs through 2009. Interbike industry consultant Lance Camisasca recently said the decision to stay or move must be made by mid-2008.
If Interbike were to move, the leading options are Anaheim and Denver. They have the required floor space, and good restaurants, hotels and entertainment for the more than 20,000 who normally attend.
Bike culture
The two cities also are known for the bicycling culture, something that's been missing in Las Vegas.
What does Interbike consider in making this decision?
Contiguous exhibit space of 700,000 square feet;
Diverse selection of hotels, restaurants and entertainment;
A nearby international airport;
Relaxed labor union regulations;
A nearby Outdoor Demo site with lots of cross-country and downhill trails, as well as a closed loop road;
A known cycling destination.
If you're interested, Interbike has posted the powerpoint presentation given by Camisasca at last week Bicycle Leadership Conference.
The 2008 Interbike opens with the Outdoor Demo on September 22-23 in Boulder City, Nevada. It continues September 24-26 at the Sands convention center. For the first time, an outdoor demo will be held on the East Coast in Providence, R.I., from Oct. 21-22.
