The Lance Armstrong Foundation is expanding the LiveStrong Challenge series of fund-raiser bike rides to include the San Francisco Bay Area this summer.
The cancer research fund-raisers are returning to Portland, Philadelphia and Austin, and organizers have added an as-yet undetermined site in the Bay Area for a fourth fund-raiser in 2008.
Reflecting Lance Armstrong's growing interest in running, as well as his continued support for cycling, the events once again give participants the choice to either ride their bikes or run.
Dates
The dates and locations are:
Portland, Oregon — June 29
Bay Area — July 13
Philadelphia — August 24
Austin — October 25-26
Part of Armstrong's hometown Austin event is the Ride for the Roses, which is open to participants raising a minimum $10,000.
The first three events comprise the LiveStrong Village activities on Saturday and a 5K run and a bicycle ride on Sunday. Several options are available for the bike rides, with the longest distance for each event about 100 miles.
Austin festivities
In Austin, the LiveStrong Village is open Friday and Saturday; the walk/run and an evening awards dinner is scheduled on Saturday. The bike ride and post-event celebration are sunday.
There's a $50 registration fee. Cyclists are required to raise a minimum $250; there is no minimum for runners or walkers. There is a fund-raising appreciation dinner Saturday night at each venue for those who've raised $3,000 or more.
In addition to the dinner, there is a schedule of incentives for those collecting more than the minimum. These includes Challenge bags, caps, and jerseys. The Ride for the Roses has its own incentives including transporation to all events and free hotel accommodations.
Good luck to everyone who plans to raise money for these events. You'll be helping to fund programs that address the physical, emotional and practical issues faced by cancer survivors. Since 1997, the foundations has issued more than $26 million in grants.
