What inspires Don Boehly to keep pedaling?
The 49-year-old handyman from Grayson, Ky., is cycling through all 50 states to raise awareness for the families of the victims of 9/11.
He began bicycling Sept. 1, 2004, and so far has ridden through Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and California, according to a Tahoe Daily Tribune story about his bicycle tour.
His most recent stop has been Yreka, where the Siskiyou Daily News reported he has bicycled 5,720 miles and gone through five tires, 12 tubes, a cog, a chain, and a cable (what, no broken spokes?).
Don usually stays in firehouses along the way, although Yreka put him up in a emergency shelter for men. He talks to folks along the way and urges them to donate to one of the charities posted on his 911 Cross Country Cycling Tour website. You can also check his progress there with his frequent updates.
Don estimates the trip will cover 25,000 miles. He plans to finish in New York City on Sept. 11, 2007.
