The top women's sprinter in America's track cycling is looking ahead to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Jennie Reed has a cool dozen national cycling jerseys and is looking to win more at the USA Cycling elite national championships in Carson, California. Reed won the keirin Thursday, the sprint Friday.
Reed hopes to perform better in the upcoming Olympics than she did in 2004. In Athens she expected to win the 200-meter sprint, an event that no American woman had medaled in since 1988.
But it wasn't to be, as she placed 10th out of 12. She told the AP:
“I think the whole experience of having so much stimulus, there's nothing that could have prepared me for that.”
“Hopefully, I can bring my level up over the next year,” Reed said. “Last time around, to be realistic, I was really happy to qualify. Looking back, I was a real far shot for a medal. But now, I'd like to put myself in that top four and have a real chance again.”
For those in the Pacific Northwest, Reed is a graduate of Issaquah High School, east of Seattle.
