Country cycling and no rain at Cascade's Flying Wheels bike ride

The forecast of scattered showers never materialized on Saturday for the Cascade Bicycle Club's Flying Wheels bicycle ride in eastern King County.

Some 3,150 bicycling enthusiasts showed up for the ride, which features hilly routes of 100 and 65 miles, and easier routes of 50 and 25 miles.

The ride that begins and ends at Redmond's Marymoor Park Velodrome is promoted as a warm-up ride for July's Seattle-to-Portland 200-mile bike tour. The reasoning goes that if you can handle the 50 or 65 milers, you can handle the STP 2-day ride. If you successfully tackle the century ride, you're good to go for a 1-day STP.

Cascade has posted the maps and elevations of the Flying Wheels rides.

Nearly a third of the bicyclists showed up to the register the day of the event.

In addition to the massage, merchandise and other tents, cyclists at this year's Finish Line Festival were entertained by the Little 100 bike race in the velodrome. Only slightly reminiscent of “Breaking Away,” contestants dress up in outfits and compete on old bikes supplies by the organizers.

This year's STP is scheduled for July 14-15.
