There's a free, 11-page bike tune up guide available online if you're looking for some basic do-it-yourself information.

The Gear Up! 2007 Bicycling Guide is produced by sports equipment retailer Sun & Ski Sports and offers suggestions on when, where and how to lube your bike. It can be downloaded as a .pdf document.

A one-page chart near the front also suggests bike checks and services that should be performed before every ride, every month, six months, and year. A diagram shows the points on the bike that require lubrication.

There's also three pages about the use and care of the quick-release, a basic piece of equipment on most bikes but one that apparently is misunderstood and the cause of many avoidable accidents by beginning bicyclists.

To learn more about quick releases, check Sheldon Brown's page on quick release skewers. In fact, that website is an excellent place to go for the answers to any questions you have about your bike.

Another good site for bike information is Jim Langley Bike Aficionado; Jim is the former technical ed for Bicycling magazine.
