American cyclist Chris Horner of the Predictor Lotto team got to wear the yellow leader's jersey going into the the final stage — an individual time trial — of the Tour of Romandie on Sunday.
Horner, 35, finished 7th in the 12.6-mile time trial around Lausanne, on Sunday, dropping to a 5th place finish overall.
Thomas Dekker of Rabobank was a double winner on Sunday, winning the final stage and finishing first overall to win the six-day race around the French-speaking part of Switzerland. Former Discovery Channel cyclist Paolo Salvodelli, also of Rabobank, finished second on the day and second overall.
Horner took the yellow jersey by virtue of his good showing in the mountainous 96-mile stage on Saturday that included rain, trecherous roads and fog. The American finished third, opening up an attack in the final mile of the stage only to be passed by Igor Hernandez and Dekker at the finish line.
He later told CyclingNews:
“I always prefer to win stages, but the others wouldn't let me have both the yellow jersey and the stage win.”
Earlier this year, Horner raced in the Amgen Tour of California and the Paris-Nice. He didn't revisit the US for the Tour de Georgia last month, even though he's a former overall winner of the week-long stage race around Georgia.
The Versus cable network will show highlights of the Tour of Romandie at 5 p.m. (ET) this afternoon (Sunday).
