Civic and business leaders in Silicon Valley jumped on their bikes Friday to rally the troops for a big turnout for National Bike to Work Day during the week of May 14-18.
Hundreds of bicycle clubs and business groups across the nation are making plans for Bike to Work Day, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. Workers are being encouraged to leave their cars parked at home and commute by bicycle that day in hopes that they'll realize that bike commuting is possible… maybe even fun.
In the Silicon Valley, business leaders are promoting the CEO/Celebrity Cycle to Work Day Challenge to encourage participation the event. Area CEOs and government leaders are being challenged to ride their own bikes to work on May 17, encourage employees to do the same, and host welcome stations for cyclists at their offices.

The League of American Bicyclists has posted a growing list of cities that are participating in special events during National Bike Month and Bike to Work Day. Most cities hold the event on either May 17 or 18.
The League also lists ideas for 50 ways to celebrate Bike Month, in addition to its publicity resources for print, radio and TV.
Other cities
Some examples of what's happening in other cities:
Starbucks is sponsoring and the Cascade Bicycle Club is organizing Bike to Work Day in Seattle on May 18. Refreshments, schwag, maps and other commuting information will be available at 37 commute stations throughout the area.
The Washington (DC) Area Bicycle Association's Bike to Work Day activities on May 18 include 24 “pit stops” for commuters and commuter convoys for those who don't want to ride alone. There's even information on where to get a bike for the day (see also The WashCycle — “Free bike rentals for BTWD 2007”).
The Bicycle Coalition is hosting events for Bike to Work Day in San Francisco on May 17. Check here for details about this year's and last year's events.
The Colorado Bike to Work Day is June 27 this year. Don't know why they chose a different month, but the website tells where to find out some activities.
In addition, the League website lists other events in California • Florida • Iowa • Indiana • Kentucky • Maryland • New Jersey • New York • North Carolina • Ohio • Texas • Washington • Wisconsin .
