Northwest Crank bicycling camp

Here's a great way to jumpstart your spring bicycling to get that mileage base up for those long summer bike tours and rides.

The Seattle International Randonneurs is hosting a five-day spring training camp at Wenatchee, Washington, from April 26-30. The festival is designed for cyclists of all abilities who want to put in some good miles out of the rain.

The camp features two fully supported bike rides each day with options for short, medium and long mileage. Cue sheets are also available for unsupported rides.

SIRs chose Wenatchee as the base camp because it is in the rain shadow of the Cascades and boasts 300 sunny days a year. Similar spring camps are usually held in the Sunbelt to the south.

Cyclists will be able to explore the Columbia and Wenatchee basins with rides that take them to Badger Mountain, Cashmere, Lake Chelan, Quincy and Ephrata.

David Rowe, the blogger at Ready to Ride and one of the camp's organizers, tells me they'll cap entrants at 100 this year. Anyone is welcome to participate, he says. It's not just for randonneurs or ultracyclists.

The cost is $65, which covers ride support and a Saturday night banquet.

More information is available at the Northwest Crank website, and David writes about it at “Riding in the rain shadow.”
