Searching for inspiration? Look no further than this story sent in by a reader about Guy Spear. You'll never again complain that it's too hot, too cold, or too windy for a bicycle ride.
Spear is a 68-year-old cyclist from North Carolina who regularly rides his bike about 100 miles a week. He lost his lower left leg 13 years ago when he was struck by a car, and now rides using a prosthesis, at right.
In a story in the Winston-Salem Journal, Spear says:
“Getting back on the bike wasn't hard. … I guess you just do your thing and keep on going. I never got depressed or anything about it.”
The near fatal injury happened when Spear was bicycling on a country road near Charlotte. The driver, who had swerved into Spear when she bent down to pick up something in the car, was an EMT and was able to stop the bleeding from a major artery in his leg. Otherwise, he would have died.
Spear returned to bicycling as soon as doctors gave him the go ahead. He started by using the prosthesis he used for walking. He later helped to design and build another one, shown in the picture, that clips right onto the bicycle pedal.
Until his hip started bothering him not that long ago, Spear said he was riding about 250 miles a week.
What's amazing about Spear is that he didn't let adversity get him down. He made adjustments that enabled him to keep doing what he likes.
That cold and sinus headache doesn't seem like such a big deal now. Guess I'll go out for a spin.
