Won’t appear before French anti-doping panel
The French anti-doping authority has dismissed proceedings against Spanish cyclist Oscar Pereiro for failing two doping tests during the 2006 Tour de France.
He showed them a note from his doctor. End of story. Everything is forgiven.
Last week a French newspaper reported the leak that Pereiro tested positive for the banned substance salbutamol (an asthma medication) during the Tour.
The Union Cycliste Internationale has known that Pereiro has a medical condition that allows him to use salbutamol and has issued him a medical clearance. But this wasn’t good enough for the AFLD (acronym for the French anti-dopers). They wanted to see it for themselves.
Apparently they’d asked to see the proof several times since the Tour, but Pereiro had ignored the requests. When they publicized the issue through the leak, Pereiro ponied up the documents that the French needed.
The irony in all of this was that Pereiro stands to win the 2006 Tour de France if doping charges against American Floyd Landis are upheld, and suddenly here he was under suspicion for doping.
In the end, much ado about nothing.
