A brake problem with some 2007 model year bicycles prompted Cannondale Bicycle Corp. to recall about 700 bikes, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

(Update: Cannondale asserts the number of bicycles “recalled” at 145. Although the number of bikes with the flaw was 700, the problem was caught before most of the bikes made it out the door, and the other affected bikes remained at the warehouse. Cannondale also told Bicycle Retailer and Industry News that the company or retailers have contacted all the customers.)

Apparently the front brake can fail; no injuries have been reported.

The recalled bike models include Six 13 Team 1 and Synapse Carbon SL1.

The bikes, made in the US, were sold from authorized Cannondale dealers nationwide from July 2006 through November 2006 for between $3,200 and $4,500.

The Bethel, Connecticut-based company or the dealers already have contacted the consumers, who should stop using the bike immediately and bring them back to the shop for inspection or repair.

Consumers with questions can contact Cannondale at (800) BIKE-USA between 9 – 5 (EST), Monday through Friday. More info about the Cannondale recall at the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
