Virginia has printed up a bicycle touring map for the state that includes major cross-state bike routes totalling some 800 miles, as well as a half dozen or more rail-to-trail bike paths and off-road mountain biking areas.
Bicycling in Virginia is also available online in two .pdf downloads at “full map” and the reverse “trail side.”
One of the main features of the map are the two US bicycle routes that criss-cross the state. Route 1 runs north-south about from the DC suburbs, through Richmond and into southern Virginia. The east-west Route 76 essentially follows the old Bikecentennial (Trans-America) trail from Yorktown, Virginia, through the Appalachians and into Kentucky at The Breaks.
Some other features include:
Virginia Capital Trail: links Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond;
Virginia Creeper Trail: runs from White Top Mountain to Abingdon;
Tobacco Heritage Trail: connects South Hill and Brodnax in Southern Virginia;
Heart of Appalachia Bike Route: a southwestern Virginia trail linking Coeburn and Burkes Garden;
New River Trail: a riverside route connecting Galax, Fries and Pulaski;
Northern Virginia Trail Network: highlighted by the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park.
The map also marks campgrounds, sightseeing opportunities, bike shops, hometowns for bike clubs, picnic grounds, and other features for cyclists.
The map will be made available at the state's visitor's centers. You can also order at the website for downland .pdf copies.
