Floyd Landis will launch his defense against doping charges next week when his attorney submits materials to a US Anti-Doping Agency review board that there's insufficient evidence to proceed against this year's Tour de France winner.
In a press release posted at FloydLandis.com, attorney Howard Jacobs says he and a team of scientific experts found “inconsistencies in the testing protocol and methodology” after reviewing 370 pages of documents provided by the French lab.
The announcement didn't say what those inconsistencies are, but Jacobs said they support Landis' innocence. “While I cannot comment on the full details of our findings, we now have the foundation for a very strong defense should the case proceed to arbitration,” Jacobs said.
Maybe some of those details will be revealed Monday when Jacobs submits materials to the review board convened by the USADA to decide whether there is sufficient evidence for the case to go to the anti-doping agency for further action.
In the likely event that the case goes to arbitration, Landis' attorney wants the hearing open to the public. “…We are asking for complete transparency in this process. Floyd has maintained his innocence from the outset and what we have found in the official document package points to a premature public conviction before all of the evidence could be considered.”
The announcement brought out a groundswell of support for Landis at his website, with more than 70 messages at last count. While most signify their support of Landis, others condemn Dick Pound and the World Anti-Doping Agency.
