Although today it looks like fenders and rain gear will be necessary for the 2006 Seattle-to-Portland bike ride this weekend, don't worry. It's all supposed to clear up by Saturday.
The weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday bicycle riders calls for sunny weather with highs in the mid-70s in Seattle to low-80s in Portland. No rain. No clouds.
That early morning departure from Seattle on Saturday could call for a light jacket or polypro, however, as the temperature will be in the low 50s at 5 a.m.
The 200-mile STP, sponsored by Seattle-based Cascade Bicycle Club, is the largest multi-day bicycle event in the Northwest. It can be ridden in either one or two days. Camping or hotels are available throughout the middle portion of the ride.
Among the 8,000-plus riders who signed up this year, the oldest cyclist is 83; there are 29 participants under the age of 10.
Last year, cyclists from 38 states rode, as well as those from Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Switzerland and Denmark. For half the riders, it was their first STP.
If it is your first STP, please watch those pacelines. There are a wide variety of cyclists participating this weekend, and some inexperienced riders like to hop on the train to save energy. Just be aware that everyone might not know the etiquette of paceline riding and there could be some unexpected manuevers.
