“I never expected to pull off a stunt like that.”

Cyclist Philippe Gilbert talking honestly about winning the 2nd stage at the Dauphiné Libéré bike race on Tuesday.

The Belgian rider for Francaise des Jeux took off with two other riders about an hour into the 125-mile stage and stayed far ahead of any peloton riders who tried to bridge the gap.

Not only did he win the stage by more than 5 minutes, but he also holds the leader's yellow jersey. VeloNews reports that Gilbert, who won the Het Volk bike race in Belgium earlier this spring, has a good chance of holding the yellow for another day as he is expected to do well in Wednesday's individual time trial.

Four cyclists, including Americans David Zabriskie and George Hincapie are tied ini 4th place, 5 minutes and 27 seconds out of first place.
