How are you going to celebrate your 100th birthday? Clair Duckham went for a bike ride.
The 100-year-old resident of an assisted living center in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, hit the road stoking a tandem on a 5-mile ride through nearby Wheaton.
He was joined by 30 members of the local Spokes bicycle club and a police escort. But the big ride was scheduled a few days later in Dayton, where he was to ride 22 miles with friends from the Dayton Cycling Club which he helped start in 1961.
The Naperville Sun said Duckham was born in Kenton, Ohio, and bought his first bicycle — a Schwinn Superior — in 1939 for $67.39. He used to compete in races all over the Midwest, and helped form a racing team for the Dayton club.
“That's why I'm still alive. Riding a bike is good exercise. It kept me healthy.”
His last big ride was in 1997, above, when he rode 20 miles with the Dayton club. He's scheduled to be the honorary rider for 21st Lake Tour Bike Trek sponsored by the American Lung Association of Illinois in June.
