I thought fans of multi-day group bicycle tours in Maine might be out of luck this year after the Maine Wheels Bicycle Club announced it was taking a year off from both its Moose Tour and Coastal Tour in 2006.
But there's still the Trek Across Maine, a three-day supported bike tour across 180 miles of blue highways. It's a fund-raiser for the Maine Lung Association and 1,400 cyclists already have signed up, representing more than a quarter million dollars in pledges.
The ride, operated in cooperation with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, begins at the Sunday River Ski Resort in Bethel on June 16 and ends at the Owls Head Transportation Museum, home of many 19th and 20th century bicycles, on June 18.
A press release in the VillageSoup website touts the new stretch of scenic biking along Rockland Harbor on the way to the Museum in Owls Head.
More information and registration is available at the Trek Across Maine website.
Meanwhile, the folks at the Maine Wheels Bicycle Club — who have operated the Moose Tour every year since 1992 — say they will once again lead the Moose Tour in 2007 after taking a year off.
Other bicycle tours not so far East?
The La Vista (Nebraska) Sun writes about the 26th annual Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska. This year's tour, ranging from 441 to 503 miles depending on options, is dubbed the international tour because if visits towns and locations with foreign names or history. The town of Geneva has Swiss origins, naturally, and the town of Atlanta was home to German POWs during World War II.
Deadline to sign up for the 2006 BRAN is April 28, or whenever the 600 rider limit is reached. A BRAN .pdf document gives details about the ride.
In another popular Midwest bicycle tour, the Des Moines Register has been writing about its 34th annual Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI). Learn about this year's “hilly” route, or the part volunteers play in the annual event.
If you're thinking about riding his this year's RAGBRAI, sign up soon. Registration for the lottery for this year's 444-mile ride is due on April 1. The bike ride runs July 23-29.
