Gavin Rees, who boasts that he has more metal in his head than anyone else in Europe, is planning a summer fund-raising bike tour from the UK to L'Alpe D'Huez.
The 29-year-old teacher has 24 titanium plates and 131 screws in his head. The metal was put in to reconstruct his skull after he fell more than 100 feet after colliding with his friend while skiing in the Alps.
Inspired by Lance Armstrong's comeback from cancer, Rees and his friend from the accident, Duncan Edwards (left and right at top), are cycling to the famed mountain on many Tour de France routes by way of Geneva, a distance of 1,000 miles. He told the BBC:
“You can obviously get to Geneva in shorter than 1,000, but 1,000 has a nice ring to it. And to pay homage to Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France and cycling and everything else that's kept me going for three years, we're going to go up Alp D'Huez if we can.”
In addition to just proving he can do it, Rees is making the trip to raise money for the Morriston Hospital's maxillofacial unit in south Wales, where he was treated.
The two are scheduled to set out in August. More information is available at their CycleGeneva website and an article in Redhill and Reigate Life.
