US cyclist Bobby Julich gave up the yellow and white leader's jersey to Tom Boonen, who won the Stage 1 sprint in the Paris-Nice bike race Monday.
Team CSC's Julich, who became the first American to ever win the “Race to the Sun” in 2005, had the leader's jersey after cycling to a win in the 3-mile prologue on Sunday. He's in 2nd place, 7 second behind.
Julich teammate, American cyclist David Zabriskie, took an early 5-minute lead, but was caught after about 30 miles. Then Christophe Laurent and Stephane Auge staged a breakaway, but were caught with just 3.6 miles from the finish. If one of them had won, it would have marked the first French stage win in Paris-Nice since 2002, according to the play-by-play report.
Boonen's Quick.Step team reeled them in, however, and the Belgian cyclist won the sprint in Saint Amand Montrond against Australian Allan Davis.
Tuesday's stage is 124 miles from Cerilly to Belleville (hey, would that be Belleville as in the Triplets of Belleville?). The peloton faces 5 Cat 3 climbs and 1 Cat 2 climb.
