Tour of California already decided?

Here we are on the fifth day of the Amgen Tour of California, and many riders are saying the race is over.

It's a compliment to American Floyd Landis (here's a recent interview at VeloNews), who sits in first place, and the strength of his Swiss Phonak team that a 29-second lead with four stages remaining is considered an insurmountable lead.

“It now looks as if the overall standings may have been decided, but we still have a couple of exciting stages ahead of us,” Bjarne Riis, the racing director for Team CSC, told CyclingNews.

Levi Leipheimer, the Gerolsteiner team leader who wore the golden jersey for two days, told VeloNews:

“It looks to me like Floyd's got it. There's no one left that can really challenge the GC, so I think it's pretty much finished.”

The peloton has left Monterey and is heading south along the coast, past Big Sur, to San Luis Obispo. Although the 130-mile course is very hilly, the cyclists should get a boost from the prevailing southern winds.
