I've seen some pretty unique inventions for the bicycle come from across the pond. First there was the three-way Danish bicycle, then the sideways bicycle from Ireland.
Now a Swiss inventor has built a Bike Tree that stows bicycles out of the reach of passersby and under cover of an umbrella-like affair.
Installed in Geneva, the Bike Trees lift the bicycles about 12 feet and keep them under shelter. Encouraged for use in train stations and along walkways, the Bike Trees protect the bikes and provide a roof over the heads of pedestrians. The website says you can slap advertising on them as well.
The storage mechanism is activated by a PIN card. It looks expensive; I'm sure it would take some heavy subsidies to put these in general use in the US.
