The majority of cyclists who took the “To flip or not to flip” poll on this site responded that flipping off or yelling or cursing at motorists is confrontational and should be avoided.
Fifty-six percent said they don't confront motorists, 17 percent said they believe it's instructional to alert motorists to their errors, and 26 percent said it doesn't matter, they feel better after firing a few well-aimed barbs.
I set up the poll following news of an irate Portland cyclist who blocked a bus and was sucker punched by one of its passengers. It reminded me of a Christmas Eve incident where I issued a one-finger salute to a motorist and felt a little foolish afterwards.
A couple of readers said the poll didn't have the appropriate answer: “It's pointless.” Another cyclist said where he grew up, flipping off a motorist could get you shot.
Anyway, thanks to the 23 people who responded. Next time I'm in a close call, I'll keep pedalling and repeat, “I'm just out for a ride. I'm just out for a ride.” OK, maybe I'll mutter a few comments as well.
