Bicycle jousting. Flaming bicycle tires. Tall bicycle welding. Civil disobedience.
And that's just the trailer for the documentary “B.I.K.E.”, one of the films at this year's Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
The Slamdance festival, in its 12th year, takes place at the same time as Robert Redford's popular Sundance film festival, but features first-time filmmakers working on a shoestring budget.
“B.I.K.E.” tells how two filmmakers, Anthony Howard and Jacob Septimus, try to infiltrate what one member calls the “only outlaw bicycle club” in the country — New York City's Black Label. A trailer is available at their B.I.K.E. website, along with showtimes this week in Park City and Salt Lake City.
New York magazine has a piece on the city's underground bike clubs, including Black Label, at their regular get-together. In addition to jousting, the author describes an event called “Whiplash,” in which two cyclists tied together by a rope pedal away from each other until one is pulled from the bike.
That might be fun, but Cascade's Chilly Hilly is extreme enough for me.
