The Ditty Bops, cycling and singing in LA

Cycling might not make you musically talented, but The Ditty Bops are proof that it won't hurt either.

The female singing duo from Los Angeles say that bike riding is one of their favorite leisure pursuits. They often tool around LA on their bicycles and even participated in a recent Mango Tree Ride.

Amanda Barrett (mandolin and dulcimer) and Abby Dewald (guitar) enjoy cycling so much that they've included it in their schtick. Their publicity photos, below, show them astride bicycles, and their 2006 wall calendar, above, poses them with bikes and bikinis.

The Ditty Bops opened for Tori Amos recently, and also have pubished a CD through Warner Brothers. They've been written up in the LA Weekly, Paste Magazine, and the C.I.C.L.E. blog, where I stumbled across them and read an interview about their cycling pursuits.

In that interview, Dewald attributes her interest to cycling from her days at UC-Davis (that town has been named the nation's most bike friendly). It helps her get the blood flowing so she can feel creative.

That's when Barrett offers, “Biking is definitely a hot activity.”

“It can be. I'm always checking out cute bike messengers,” Dewald said.

How did the idea for a bike-bikini calendar arise?

“We made a bikini calendar a couple years ago with friends and it was so fun we wanted to do it again. This time we wanted it to showcase bikes because we love bikes and because there are too many chick/hot rod-car-calendars.  We wanted it to be playfully sexy and fantastical.  It was so fun to shoot and our photographer Rick Whitmore who is also our web designer is absolutely an AMAZING artist and a joy to work with.”

And that's how stuff happens in LA.
