Bicycle commuters get new BikeStation in Long Beach

Long Beach is the new home of what the Press-Telegram calls a “state-of-the-art bicycle facility.”

The Bikestation Long Beach first opened as a demonstration project for cycling commuters in 1996, the first facility of its kind in the US. After nine years of continuous operation, Bikestation Long Beach held a grand opening for its new facility on Friday.

The new Bikestation offers free supervised parking for bicyclists in two 600-square-foot glass pavilions; members who pay $96 a year get 24-hour access to lockers and storage space. The facility also offers rentals, bike repairs, restrooms and changing rooms, a snack bar and shop.

Since opening the so-called demonstration project in 1996, the nonprofit Bikestation organization has launched similar bike facilities in Seattle, San Francisco, Palo Alto and Berkeley. New Bikestations are planned to open in 2006 in Santa Barbara and, in a departure from the West Coast, at Union Station in Washington DC.
