Five bicycle racers, including Dario Frigo, and a trainer received suspended sentences on Monday stemming from a raid by Italian police who found drugs and syringes in their hotel rooms during the 2001 Giro d'Italia.
The most well-known among the five, Frigo, also was forced to drop out of the 2005 Tour de France, reports the TdF 2005 blog, after police found doses of EPO in his wife's car. He's currently facing charges in France in that incident.
Frigo, Giuseppe Giuseppe Di Grande, and Alberto Elli each received a six-month suspended sentence and a $14,500 fine in connection with the 2001 case, VeloNews reports. Domenico Romano and Ermanno Brignoli each received suspended sentences of slightly less than six months after making a deal with the court.
Trainer Primo Pregnolato received an eight-month suspended sentence, $7,260 euro fine, and cannot be associated with bike racing during the sentence.
Frigo won the Paris-Nice and Tour of Romandie in 2001, the year he was booted from the Giro.
