The bronze statue of a woman dressed in early 20th century garb riding a bicycle is returning to the Riverton Park on the Spokane River in Couer d’Alene.

The statue, dubbed Kate, was stolen in early January. Thieves had removed the woman, leaving the bicycle behind. (A rare case in which the bicycle was not stolen.)
Kate — and the two dogs chasing her — had been a stationary companion for cyclists rolling through the park on the North Idaho Centennial Trail at Riverton Park since 2007.
Previously, she had ridden alongside the Idaho Centennial Trail in Stateline. Vandals damaged the statue in 2003, however, it was put in storage until this new home had been found.
Police speculated that thieves had planned to sell the bronze for scrap metal or had merely thrown it into the river as a prank.
But she was found on some vacant property early this week by a man looking for antlers, according to the Spokesman-Review. The statue had a rope tied around its neck, and it was dirty, but it was intact.
The parks department plans to return her to Riverton Park, but with a more secure attachment to the base.
