Bicycle historian David V. Herlihy was called upon to provide background for CNN’s Art of Movement feature this month that focuses on the bicycle — “the world’s most popular vehicle.”

“From Boneshaker to BMX: 150 years of the bicycle” tells the story of the bicycle from the first wood and steel draisines to today’s lightweight carbon fiber machines.
While most of us probably have a broad-brush view of our ride’s history, there are some interesting tidbits included in the capsules.
I also enjoyed the photos — many which were new to me — that accompanied the capsules.
Herlihy is the author of Bicycle: The History, published 10 years ago. He also wrote the gripping historical mystery about Frank Lenz, The Lost Cyclist: The Epic Tale of an American Adventurer and His Mysterious Disappearance
When I spoke with Herlihy at the Seattle Bicycle Expo a couple of years ago, he said he was working on a biography of French cyclist Octave Lapize. He became famous as an early Tour de France winner and for shouting “You are assassins!” at race organizers as he became the first to summit the Col du Tourmalet.
