Chicago-based bicycle component maker SRAM is recalling 1,700 derailleurs because of a fall hazard. SRAM asks owners to stop riding bikes with that equipment and return them for free replacement.
According to SRAM and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a pivot pin can come loose on the SRAM RED WiFLi Rear Derailleur and cause it to pull off and get caught in the rear wheel.
The company has received 43 reports of the derailleur coming loose, and one case of cuts and bruises.
The derailleurs were made in Taiwan and sold in the U.S. from September 2012 to March 2013. They were sold as an aftermarket component for $380, or as equipment on new bicycles.
To identify the derailleur, look for SRAM RED on the back of the inner pully wheel cage plate, most visible when looking through the spokes from the other side. The serial numbers of derailleurs in the recall are:
31T2 | 37T2 | 43T2 | 49T2 | 03T3 | 09T3 |
32T2 | 38T2 | 44T2 | 50T2 | 04T3 | 10T3 |
33T2 | 39T2 | 45T2 | 51T2 | 05T3 | 11T3 |
34T2 | 40T2 | 46T2 | 52T2 | 06T3
35T2 | 41T2 | 47T2 | 01T3 | 07T3
36T2 | 42T2 | 78T2 | 02T3 | 08T3 |
Either return the bike to the place of purchase for free replacement and installation. If purchased as an aftermarket part, the buyers can return it to the shop for free replacement or contact SRAM at (800) 346-2928 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday CT or online at www.sram.com.
The replacement is a SRAM 1091R model.

If you have the Aero Glide (non-WiFli) short cage derailleur, you’re not affected. That derailleur looks just like the WiFli medium cage version.
