Salsa Cycles issued a recall for 1,700 black La Cruz bicycle forks because they have a history of bending above the disc brake mount.
The bike forks were sold individually and on Salsa Vaya brand bicycles and framesets.
The company and the Consumer Protection Safety Commission recommends that owners stop riding the bicycles immediately and take them to a local Salsa dealer for inspection and free replacement or a refund.
Bloomington, Minnesota-based Salsa Cycles, a subsidiary of Quality Bicycle Products, says it has received eight reports of faulty forks, although no one has been injured. The part was made in Taiwan by CWI.
The forks were sold in dealers and online from February 2011 through June 12 for about $100. The Salsa Vaya bikes cost between $1,300 and $1,600. The forks are made of tubular chromoly steel.
To determine if the bike fork is covered by the recall, you can check the batch code on the steerer tube. The Salsa Vaya bike forks are stamped with 2011 02 21, 2011 04 11, 2011 06 14 and 2011 09 09. The Salsa La Cruz bike forks are stamped 2011 03 01, 2011 04 08, 2011 05 30 and 2011 09 09.
