Specialized Bicycle Components is recalling 600 brake lever assemblies on aerobars that are faulty and can fail to stop the bicycle.
The US Consumer Protection Safety Commission is urging owners of any bicycles with the Tektro TL-83 brake levers to stop using them and contact dealers for a free replacement.
The Morgan Hill, Calif.-based bike importer received one report of the brakes failing to work. The problem occurs when the adjuster cap and brake cable slide out of position.
The Tektro TL-83 brake levers in the recall are used only on aerobars sold on 2010 and 2011 S-Works Shiv and 2012 S-Works Siv TT bike frames. They were also sold as service parts for those frames. As they’re modified from another brake, the Model Numbers read “TL-720” when the lever arm is depressed.
The frame modules sold for $5,500 to $6,100, and the levers sold as aftermarket for about $80.
