Sad news from the Death Valley National Park today.
The San Francisco cyclist who disappeared from a bike tour gathering at a campground last week had been found dead.
Rescuers found the body of George Kohler, 67, in the northern area of the park between the Mesquite Campground and Scotty’s Castle.
Inyo County Sheriff’s Cpl. Terry Waterbury said in a statement :
“It appears that Mr. Kohler left the campfire and took off cross-country on foot. This is a very tragic situation.”
Kohler, who worked as a personal trainer, was one of the cyclists on an Adventure Cycling Association week-long tour through Death Valley last week.
Last Monday night, he told his riding mates that he was tired and was heading back to his tent. When he didn’t show up in the morning, members of the party checked his tent could tell he never returned there.
Foul play is not suspected in the death, although an autopsy is required in unattended deaths.
A statement from Adventure Cycling executive director Jim Sayer reads:
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Kohler. We will continue to work closely with authorities as they investigate this matter.”
