When the Hollywood glitterati take their walk down the Red Carpet at the Academy Awards on Sunday, imagine that they've arrived by bicycle.
It's doubtful they did. I think the limousine is still the transport of choice to such events.
But if publicity photos from Hollywood are any indication, the stars do enjoy taking an occasional spin on two wheels.
Philadelphia film critic Steven Rea, an avid bicyclists himself, has been providing these archived photos at his Rides a Bike blog for a couple of years. He has assembled some of them in a new book — “Hollywood Rides a Bike; Cycling with the Stars.”
The book features 125 photos of vintage film stars riding their bicycles around movie lots or making appearances in movies aboard a bike — consider Paul Newman in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.”
The book also has an index to the bicycles the stars are riding in the photos, which date from the 1930s to 1950s.
