You can probably guess from the photo at left that the hundreds of miles of flatness across Kansas and eastern Colorado were taking a toll on my sanity on a cross-country bicycle tour some 20 years ago.
Those are the Rockies in the background, however, and this bike tour was about to take on a whole new, vertical complexion.
While many cyclists flock to the Rockies for several multi-day bike tours every year, cyclists who prefer flat terrain may feel left out.
No longer. The Denver Post, host of the Ride the Rockies, announced its new Colorado ride this week called “Pedal the Plains.”
September
Although there aren't a lot of details available, the first Pedal the Plains will be held Sept 21-23, 2012, somewhere in eastern Colorado.
Organizers say the daily route will cover 30 to 100 miles with overnight in towns on the high plains.
More details will be available in the spring. The tour will be sponsored by the Denver Post, Viaero Wireless and the governor's office.
More bike rides
The Rockies already have their own share of bicycle tours.
The Denver Post's Ride the Rockies, celebrating 27 years in 2012, is announcing the 2012 route on Feb. 5 at its first-ever route announcement party.
Although the route is officially a secret, it's known the ride is heading through the Fort Collins area on June 15. Ride organizers had to get approval from county commissioners there because they limit how many organized tours can use any stretch of county road in a given month.
Some 2,000 cyclists take part in Ride the Rockies, chosen by lottery from nearly double that number who apply. The dates are June 10-16, 2012.
Right on the heels of Ride the Rockies is the 2012 Bicycle Tour of Colorado, June 17-23.
Later on is the Colorado Rocky Mountain Bike Tour from Aug. 5-12, 2012.
See all the Colorado bike tours at Across State Bike Tours for 2012.
This new Colorado bicycle ride isn't the only Pedal the Plains. The MS Society holds a Pedal the Plains charity bicycle ride by that name in Minnesota on Aug. 4-5.
