Giant Bicycle is recalling 900 road bicycles because the carbon fork can crack, creating a dangerous situation for the riders.

The recall involves the Giant Defy Advanced and Avail Advanced model bicycles.

The company and US Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends owners stop riding the bikes immediately and contact an authorized Giant bike dealer for inspection and replacement.

The bicycles were made in Taiwan and imported by Newbury Park, Calif.-based Giant Bicycle Inc. The recall comprises all 2012 model year men's Giant Defy Advanced 0, 1 and 2 model bicycles and women's Giant Avail Advanced 0, 1 and 2 model bicycles.

The fork is fabricated from an “advanced grade composite,” according to the Giant website, using high performance carbon raw material.

The bikes were sold from August through November 2011 for $3,000 to $4,550, according to CPSC.

For information, contact Giant Bicycle toll-free at 866-458-2555 from 9 to 4 (PT) Monday through Friday or visit the company's recall website.
