Favorable winds push B.A.K. riders ahead

This lonely state line outpost marks the start of the 2011 Biking Across Kansas route.
Because getting there required cycling west into a chilly headwind for 16 miles to the Colorado border, some skipped this optional ceremonial jaunt. Others got lifts in personal sag vehicles.
My son and I rode the whole way, then celebrated a tailwind heading east for about 64 miles to Saturday night's stop in Scott City.
Not surprisingly, the day's tailwinds has everyone in a good mood.One woman, whose maiden voyage on a recumbent resulted in a couple of spills, was more excited about knocking off her first 50-miler than complaining about her bike.
On Sunday we continue to Ness City on the same road – Highway 96. Rumor has it that B.A.K. is making preparations for an upcoming turn off of Route 96 sometime on Monday. It will be the first turn of the tour.
