9-year-old
Nine-year-old Aaryea Naik is one of the youngest to finish STP in 2 days. He tells Seattle Times that he'd like to try it in one-day next year.
STP cyclist injured
Update: Sunday, July 10, 2011 — The Olympian newspaper reports that an unidentified cyclist in the STP bike ride was struck by a pickup truck on Saturday.
The collision occurred about 2:30 p.m. at North Pearl Street and East Reynolds Avenue in Centralia.
Police reported that traffic had begun moving through the interesection when the cyclist fell in the path of the pickup and was run over by its dual wheels.
The cyclist was taken to a hospital in Vancouver suffering from shoulder, back and lung injuries. [No other details at this time.]
Tacks
Also, there are reports that someone spread tacks along a 4-mile stretch of Route 30 between Scappoose and Northwest Cornelius Pass Road in Oregon on Sunday, causing an epidemic of bicycle tire punctures. The Oregonian quotes M.J. Kelly of Cascade Bicycle Club, who said one cyclist lost control, fell and lost conciousness, requiring hospitalization. [Tacking used to be an annual occurrence north of Centralia, as I recall.]

Last-minute sign-ups
Update: May 5, 2011 — If you haven't signed up yet for the Seattle to Portland (STP) Bicycle Classic, it's too late. Almost.
The Cascade Bicycle Club reported that the ride sold out as of March 22. That's the earliest ever that the 10,000 openings have disappeared.
There are a couple of ways, however, to score registrations as the July 9-10 event draws near.
Auction and refunds
Cascade is making 10 registrations available at auction on eBay. The first pair will be posted on Monday, May 9, and the remainder will go up for auction in subsequent weeks.
Cascade is making low bib numbers available and throwing in free finish-line food with the registrations. Additionally, any amount over $95 can be deducted from your income tax as a charitable contribution. Check the Cascade blog and Twitter feed for details.
Also, registrations that have been returned for a refund by the June 9 deadline will be made available beginning at 10 a.m. June 13. Check the Cascade Event and Ride page for details.
Meanwhile, Cascade reports that there are still openings available in RSVP2 and Ride Around Washington.

Cascade released some data on the 10,000 registered cyclists in the 2010 STP.
The oldest was 87 years old.
Eighty-two percent were veteran STP riders. Of them 230 had ridden in 10 or more STPs. Two of them, Jerry Baker and Paul Wantzelius, had done them all. [See Wantzelius obit.]
Cyclists participated from 43 states as well as Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, England, Germany, Japan and Singapore.
