2011 Bicycle Sundays and Summer Streets begin in May in Seattle

Seattle's Bicycle Sundays returns to the shoreline road along Lake Washington for 12 Sundays this summer beginning May 8.

The 2-1/2 mile scenic stretch of Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from Mount Baker
Beach to Seward Park between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Unfortunately, the number of dates offered by the Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation has been cut back from 19 the previous two years. There are two in May, June and August, and three in July and September.

[Update: April 29, 2011 — Bicycle Sundays partner Cascade Bicycle Club wasn't consulted about reducing the number of rides in 2011, Seattle Bike Blog.]

Usually the road is closed to cars every Sunday during the summer, except for special events such as Seafair Weekend and marathons.

Still, the 12 Sundays in 2011 will be a good chance for families to get out with their kids and tool along the lake. There are several restrooms along the road and the route is level. It also makes for a traffic-free ride for any recreational cyclists on Sunday rides, like the 25-mile south Lake Washington loop.

Also, the city's Department of Transportation has scheduled four “Summer Streets” events in Ballard, Alki, Greenwood/Phinney and Rainier. These feature more of a carnival-like atmosphere on car-free streets. They'll be held in conjuction with other neighborhood or citywide events.

Together, the Bicycle Sundays and Summer Streets combine for 16 ciclovia-style events in Seattle this season.
