I’m reprinting the day-to-day journal entries of a cross-country bike tour my friend and I took in 1984. More about the TransAmerica Tour 1984
We decided to lay around and do nothing for the day. We had covered so many miles the past couple of weeks, we were feeling just plain tired. We had covered about 1,100 miles in 14 straight days of cycling.
The news that a controversial liberal radio talk show DJ — Alan Berg — had been gunned down had upset our hosts. Anyway, we just didn’t feel right overstaying our welcome. We got some advice on the easiest route to Royal Gorge and left, pedalling as far as the Regal 8 Motel on US 50, near a Kmart and a laudromat.
A friend from Denver, who had been acting as a mail drop, drove down with a box of stuff and went out to dinner with us.

Said goodbye to our hosts around 10 a.m. and headed up the Route 50 strip to the laundromat, where I neglected to wash my sleeping bag and rain gear. A woman using a front-loader hadn’t secured the door and in the middle of the wash cycle, all the water and suds came out onto the floor. I commented that I hadn’t seen that happen since an “I Love Lucy” episode.
We reached our friend from Denver and made plans to meet at the Regal 8 motel, where we were going to check into for the night. They had a pool and we needed some R&R (Coors poolside).
It was good to see him. He delivered a package of goodies from Marie, and we had dinner.
I repacked my gear to get more weight up front. I’m not sure I like the arrangement, though. My front rack is so messed up. I just hope it lasts the trip.
